A blog about writing and all things story…
I was asked by a local author whose class I attended at the WOTS (Writers on the Sound) conference last year to review his new e-book. I politely said yes, “I’d love to”and then put it on my stack of things to read, edit, re-write and review; a pile that, as I sit here is beginning to tower over me at my desk.
Anyway, I picked his book up today and began to read. Dear God! This book is more of a how-to-workshop on getting articles published than some little e-book. I’m blown away by his research and success. After meeting him I knew he was a bundle of drive and energy, which is evident in his book, but he’s also like a success coach who is giving away all his hard earned secrets.
This book, Marketing Your Magazine Articles: Inside Secrets of a Successful Freelance Writer by Roy Stevenson is not intended for a beginning writer. It assumes you know how to write and are at that, ‘how can I make some money stage’. If you’re at that stage, then this book will be illuminating and worth the $$$.
Marketing is the hardest part of being a freelance writer. Roy’s book addresses networking, and creating, nurturing and maintaining editor and publisher relationships. It’s loaded with examples of article ideas, how to plant and grow them into a successful money making crop, and sample query letters, and more, more, more. The book contains action lists in each chapter, thoroughly covered topics such as: There are 17 essential elements of the query letter, How to Market Yourself and Build Your Networks, Websites that take articles from beginning travel writers and so much more. It’s no wonder Roy managed so much success in such a short amount of time; he’s a marketing genius. I’m beyond impressed and plan on studying his book to increase my mediocre success selling feature articles to major magazines.
